North Vancouver, October 30, 2010 – The reigning Grouse Grind record holder can rest easy knowing his time is still intact, but thirty-eight year-old Mike Miskulin still conquered the course to raise $10,000 for Grind For Kids, a charitable initiative benefitting the BC Children’s Hospital. Miskulin finished in a time of 39:17. Presented by Whistler Water, Grind For Kids has raised over $200,000 since getting underway at the beginning of summer.

Miskulin nearly eclipsed the current overall men’s record of 23:48, set in August by Vancouver resident Sebastian Salas. The Grouse Grind is a 2.9km hike up the side of Grouse Mountain, and Miskulin took aim at the speed climb time as a way to raise much-need funds and awareness for the cause. His amazing effort has raised funds for BC Children’s Hospital’s Burn Unit, which is funded by the British Columbia Professional Fire Fighters Association (BCPFFA), which is also affiliated with the IAFF. Miskulin is a member of International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 4550 in Langley Township.

In reaching his fundraising goal, Miskulin raised thousands of dollars for the Burn Unit through individual pledges and corporate sponsorships. Super Save Group generously kicked off Miskulin’s fundraising effort with a $5,000 donation.

Hiking the Grouse Grind is a gruelling workout that has earned the nickname “Mother Nature’s Stairmaster” and has become a cultural phenomenon in Vancouver. Having a good “Grind Time” is cause for bragging rights for locals. Miskulin works out of the Walnut Grove fire station, and hopes his fellow firefighters and community members will continue helping him raise funds for Grind For Kids each year.
