North Vancouver, July 9, 2008 -
Trail Sense is back! A team of experts will be at the base of the Grouse Grind July 19th and 20th offering a wealth of information about hiking and outdoor safety. The Adventure Smart team, as well as a crew of invited resources will be on hand to share their knowledge and tips to safely enjoy the best of the BC Outdoors. Participants include Metro Vancouver, North Shore Black Bear Network, North Shore Search And Rescue, North Shore Hikers, BC Lung Association, Merrell Canada, BC Fire/District of North Vancouver and the North Vancouver Recreation Commission. This event showcases the support that is in place for emergency management, search and rescue prevention, and how to safely enjoy outdoor recreation. Media are invited to meet and interview experts in the industry on Saturday July 19th from 11am-1pm.

“Hiking the North Shore Mountains can be a fun and rewarding undertaking.” Says Adventure Smart coordinator, Sandra Ferguson. “The local trails provide scenic, often challenging terrain that is becoming increasingly popular with outdoor enthusiasts from all over the world. Well over 100,000 hikers undertake the Grouse Grind alone, making it one of the most popular trails in the world. Regrettably, not everyone who sets off on these famed North Shore routes is prepared. The objective of this event is to inform and educate hikers about responsible trail use in order to reduce associated injuries, fires and environmental damage.”

The event was created to arm outdoor enthusiasts with the information they require to do the things they love. The base of the Grouse Grind is the perfect venue for sharing this information with a captive audience. Despite signage and warnings, there are still those who choose to hike without adequate footwear, clothing and water. Having Uniting search & rescue volunteers, outdoor educators, fitness trainers, land stewardship authorities, park rangers, and fire prevention experts in one place sharing their expertise has made for a very popular day.

EVENT DATES: Saturday, July 19th & Sunday, July 20th, 2008 TIMES: 8:00am – 4:00pm (both days) LOCATION: Base of Grouse Grind Trail “Get informed & go outdoors!”
