Grouse Mountain Extends A Grouse Grind Challenge To Vancouver’s Top Sports Teams
July 4, 2012
July 4, 2012. North Vancouver, B.C. - The gauntlet was thrown down on the Grouse Grind Saturday by the Vancouver Whitecaps FC with midfielder Russell Teibert when he clocked an impressive time of 33:44 during a team training exercise. For most of the 'Caps, including Teibert, it was their first time tackling the Grouse Grind. The Major League Soccer club were quickly followed by the Vancouver Canucks Prospects first thing Tuesday morning who also gave Mother Nature's Stairmaster their best effort under slippery conditions. Both teams used the experience for team building and fitness.
Grouse Mountain is today extending a challenge to all Vancouver’s pro sports teams, the B.C. Lions, Vancouver Canadians, Vancouver Giants and the first team of the Vancouver Canucks to see who can out do Teibert's best on the Grouse Grind. Grouse Mountain provides all team athletes with radio frequency Grind Timers to make their records official!
"We have seen an increase in professional athletes including the Grouse Grind in their fitness regime over the years and with the recent impressive time of Russell Teibert we thought it would be a great summer challenge to extend to all of the other sports teams in our city", says Grouse Mountain General Manager Michael Cameron. "Vancouver's professional athletes are without a doubt some of the best in the world and it will be fun to see who comes out on top. Not to mention it will be some added inspiration to avid Grinders to see if they can beat the pro's times! If the result of our Grouse Grind Challenge is even better results in the arena, on the pitch or on the diamond the entire city will celebrate".
For now Russell Teibert's time has yet to be matched but are the other pros in our city up for the challenge? Only time will tell. The current Grouse Grind course record to date for men is held by Sebastian Salas who completed the hike in a blistering 23:48 on August 24, 2010. Other well known athlete who have tackled the Grouse Grind include: Shaq, Metta World Peace, The Sedins, Ashleigh McIvor, Zinedine Zidane and the Canadian Men's Rugby Team.
