Grouse Mountain, North Vancouver, August 4, 2009 –
Grouse Mountain welcomes the 2009 World Police and Fire Games on August 5, bringing together approximately 300 international race participants to compete in a special Grouse Grind® mountain race. Beginning at 9 a.m. at the base of the mountain, the event includes four separate category divisions for the fittest fire and police men and women to overcome the demanding three-kilometre course renowned as mother nature's stairmaster, and will culminate in a podium awards ceremony at 1:30 p.m. in the alpine plaza.

"We are very proud to have been selected to showcase the Grouse Grind® as a unique venue symbolizing Vancouver's outdoor culture and breathtaking scenery," says Michael Cameron, Grouse Mountain general manager. "Not only will the competitors have to climb world's most popular mountain trail to finish on the podium, but they will also have to race against some of the best international athletes."

With more than 60 sports on display at over 50 venues, the 2009 World Police and Fire Games also provides an opportunity for British Columbians to cheer on 2,500 BC athletes as they take on the world. The Games are open to all full-time professional firefighters, law enforcement, customs and correctional officers from around the world. Held every two years, the Games bring together the emergency services community for 10 days of sport, celebrating camaraderie, community and competition.

“The Grouse Grind® mountain run is a signature event at the 2009 World Police and Fire Games, and no other host city has anything that compares,” said Stu Ballantyne, CEO, 2009 World Police and Fire Games. “It’s a unique Vancouver landmark that’s beautiful, and challenging at the same time, and we’re proud to call it an official venue.” Athletes and all international guests will experience an incredible race, as well as all the summer activities Grouse Mountain has to offer.
