Grinder and Coola have emerged from hibernation! To visit our resident Grizzly bears this weekend, follow the signs on the mountaintop for the best route to the bear habitat. With snow on the mountain, we recommend wearing sturdy, weather-appropriate footwear.
Great news, hikers! The Grouse Grind is officially open. The trail is now open daily from 7:00am - 6:00pm.

This past weekend we received our first snowfall of the 2012 fall season here on Grouse Mountain. It started on Friday evening and has continued through the weekend and the early part of this week. As I write this it is still coming down.

Grinder and Coola, our two grizzly bears, really enjoy the first snowfall of the year - in fact, they are like two giant kids happy to romp around sliding, rolling and wrestling in the fresh powder. Despite their large bulk as they prepare for hibernation, they have mustered up the most energy we've seen in weeks and all for snow play.

When not wrestling with each other, we've observed the bears tobogganing down hills, barrel rolling through the fields and plunging into the ice covered pond.
Of course all of this play makes two bears, who are prepared for hibernation, quite sleepy.  So after a good exertion, both bears crash pretty hard and have long afternoon naps.  Recently, to the delight of our staff and guests, Grinder and Coola have napped right out in the open allowing for prime naptime viewing.

I wonder if they are dreaming of playing in the snow?
