As if to say, Happy April Fools Day, more snow fell over the bear den and bear habitat.  We have begun to see a few signs of spring, but the snow has shown no sign of stopping.  Grinder and Coola's 'Bear Hotel' is still surrounded by over 15 feet of snow!

This makes it fairly dark inside, and when the boys have made their first exploratory journeys to the front part of the hotel, they do not see much daylight as of yet.

This blanket of snow, combined with temperatures that are still below zero, are convincing Grinder and Coola to continue their winter hibernation.

Once the temperatures have warmed and we are starting to observe significant snow melt we will excavate the hotel by machine, allowing more daylight to enter.  This will trigger the end of hibernation, which will truly be over the day we decide to give the bears their first food of the season.

I anticipate this to still be several weeks away!

Keep following for more updates on the end of the 2011/2012 hibernation season!
