Educational programming for school groups - part of the 2014 Artists For Conservation Festival.

Adventures in Art & Education (Gr. 3-12)

Start the school year off with an adventure. This fall, bring your students to “Experience the Art of Conservation” and build awareness around environmental guardianship Sept 29-Oct 1, 2014. Artists For Conservation's youth program offers a full day of art & environmental educational activities.

About the Program

This unique program is designed to connect youth with nature through visual arts and build awareness around environmental guardianship. The program features several fun and creative activities (indoors and outdoors) exploring nature and species conservation, with a special focus on importance of understanding being an environmental guardian and how we can minimize our impact. 
Activities include an interpretive eco-walk, gallery tour, documentary film, First Nations cultural presentation, and a very special hands-on workshop with a leading nature/wildlife artist who will share through their artistic talents along with their understanding and passion for wildlife and habitat conservation. Students will leave with an Environmental Guardian certificate, and finished artwork.

Program Highlights
  • An interpretive eco-walk to learn about how humans can interact with nature in a positive way to help the success of local ecosystems and experience a wildlife encounter with a Grouse Wildlife Ambassador; 
  • Interactive talk and hands-on workshop with a prominent guest nature/wildlife artist; 
  • An interpretive gallery tour of the world's leading conservation-themed nature and wildlife art exhibit with paintings and sculptures;
  • A First Nations cultural/dance presentation; 
  • Special screening of a AFC’s latest documentary film 
  • Teachers will receive a curriculum package upon booking that contains lesson plans and handouts that can be used pre-, during- and post-Festival. These curriculums are grade-specific and have been linked directly with the PLO’s for the specific grade level they are intended.

Teaching Resources

Upon booking confirmation the teacher will receive an AFC Curriculum package that contains lesson plans and handouts that can be used pre, during and post program to enhance the student’s educational experience. These curriculums are grade specific and have been linked directly with the PLO’s for the specific grade level they are intended.

About the Artist Workshop
The artists workshop consists of a 10-minute slide presentation of photographs and journals from reference-gathering trips, a discussion of issues related to conservation and biodiversity, and a 30-minute hands-on workshop, using a selection of western Canadian wildlife species as subjects.

Minimum 15 students. 
Includes: Skyride admission, guest presenters, guides, instructional materials, student to adult ratios for grade level apply. 

Lunch is not included but can be pre-ordered at time of booking. A limited number of teachers/adult chaperones will be allowed at no extra cost (depends on student ages and group size).

Booking Information

The Artists for Conservation Adventures in Art & Education program is available from Sep. 29-Oct 1, 2014 inclusively, and lasts approximately 5 hours. Students and teachers are reminded to dress warmly for mountain or rainy weather conditions and a 1-hr eco-walk outdoors (rain or shine).
