Dining & Catering: The Observatory

Fine Dining

For as many as 10,000 years, discoverers, adventurers, and travellers have been drawn to Grouse Mountain, one of the Pacific Northwest's best-known landmarks.

The First Peoples believed that the world consisted of all that they could see from the mountaintop. Oral traditions and archeological findings suggest that Polynesian and Japanese voyagers may have sailed the nearby waters as early as the 14th and 15th centuries. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Russian, Spanish, and British explorers, trappers, and traders visited the straits, sounds, narrows, and bays at the base of the mountain. By the second half of the 19th century, settlers and loggers stood on the top of Grouse, attracted by the breathtaking vistas of indigo-blue water, jade-green forests, islands, and misty mountains that extend as far as the eye can see. By the early 20th century, pioneer residents of Vancouver were spending their summers in cottages and cabins on the North Shore and from that time forward, generations of hikers, picnickers, and eventually skiers succumbed to the beauty of Grouse.

As we begin the 21st century, Grouse Mountain remains the pinnacle, the peak, the lookout, and one of the world's great natural observatories.
